My Asian (American) Beauty Skincare Routine


I was blessed by the Skin Gods with an acne-free youth. In college, I went to bed every. single. night. with makeup on, no cleansing ever, and somehow maintained blemish free skin. However 25 hit and my skin went into quarter-life crisis mode. I’m talking full-blown cystic, hormonal acne. WHYYYYYY????!

Thus, I began exploring into Asian Beauty (AB) culture, specifically the popular Korean Beauty 12-step skincare routine. Although I’m Asian American, Mom never really preached the value of sunscreen or moisturizing daily, nor was it ever really impressed upon her growing up as a 3rd generation Asian in Hawaii. My daily routine is mostly built from samples I’ve gotten or recommendations from blogs and friends. Take a look below…

Night Routine (12-ish steps)

  1. Eye Makeup Remover – Kose Softymo Makeup Remover:

    • The best! And a non-oily formula (perfect for cleaning around lash extensions)

  2. Oil Cleanser – Tatcha Camellia Cleansing Oil

    • Currently Using: Tatcha Camellia Cleaning Oil – on the pricier side, but my fave. I like that it comes as a pump

    • Sometimes Use: Clean it Zero – Don’t love that you scoop it, but it’s easier to pack a little container when traveling

  3. Regular Cleanser – Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser

    • I have dry skin, so I use this. Comes in regular too

  4. Exfoliating Cleanser (Sunday & Wednesday) Cure Aqua Gel Cleanser

    • This is crazy stuff! It beads up your dead skin and is ultra-satisfying

  5. Toner – Thayer’s Rose Witch Hazel Toner

  6. Essence* – May Coop Raw Sauce

  7. Acne Spot Treatment – Saje Tea Tree Oil

    • Warning: Tea Tree is pungent, but it works

  8. Serum* – Sunday Riley Good Genes

  9. Night Cream – Elizabeth Arden Visible Difference Refining Moisture Cream Complex

    • Mom got me hooked on this when I went away to college and then saw her a few months later she had less wrinkles. I’ve tried other creams, but always come back to this one. It’s a perfect weight for a night cream—not too light, not too thick. I prefer it a little heavier so I feel extra moisturized when I wake up.

  10. Eye Cream* – Mizon Snail Repair Eye Cream

  11. Face Oil* – Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil

  12. Lip Balm – Carmex Classic Lip Balm


Morning Routine

  1. Toner – Thayer’s Rose Witch Hazel Toner

  2. Moisturizer – Glamglow Glowstarter Mega Illuminating Moisturizer

    • Got the Glamglow Moisturizer as a sample from a friend. Love a dewey, shiny glow but will probably switch back to my good ol’ Cerave after it runs out

    • Sometimes Use: CeraVe PM Moisturizing Lotion for Face – I prefer the PM face lotion sans sunscreen since I use a different sunscreen

  3. Sunscreen – Biore Aqua Rich Watery Essence

    • If there is one thing you take away from this list, it’s this sunscreen. It was my first forray into AB skincare and the best rec I’ve ever received. I continue to spread the good word. It’s lightweight, non-greasy and just amazing!
